With all the injuries going around the Mets clubhouse lately, the Mets finally decided to make a move with one of the injured players that was still on the 25 man roster. Juan Lagares was placed on the 15 day DL & the Mets will see how his left thumb responds to some rest. Worst case scenario is that he needs to go under the knife before the season is up. Once he gets surgery, his stay on the DL will definitely be for an extended period of time.
Lagares in his last 30 games was batting .293 with a .328 OBP & a .466 slugging percentage. So he will be missed just as much offensively as he will be defensively, especially if Conforto continues to struggle not only offensively, but with his health as well as he’s dealing with wrist issues which can cause tremendous problems for hitters. According to SNY, Lagares injured his thumb while making a diving catch on June 1st, so it’s been just over two weeks since he’s been dealing with this injury.
In the mean while, the Mets decided to recall Ty Kelly to the team. Kelly had been tearing it up in AAA Las Vegas but he hasn’t done much with his opportunity with the Mets the first time he’s been called on. He’s batting .174 with 1 HR & 2 RBI’s in a very small sample of 23 AB’s. Kelly who originally wore 55 the first time he was called up will now wear 56 as the newly reacquired Kelly Johnson reclaims his old 55 number he wore last year when he was first traded to the Mets.
