Tuesday night, Rivera started the game at 3rd base but was unable to finish the contest. In the third inning, Rivera was able to reach base however he was immediately lifted from the game for pinch runner & Mets prospect Gavin Cecchini, who was originally slated for the day off.
After the game I was able to talk with TJ Rivera & he said that he tweaked his hamstring while trying to beat out his single, while he stated that he feels much better now that the game is over & was able to rest a bit, he said he would approach it on a day to day basis. Without putting words into his mouth, it sounds like he knows he won’t be playing in tomorrow’s match up versus the Reno Aces.
Later on, I was able to speak with Wally Backman & he was able to confirm that it is an issue with tightness in Rivera’s hamstring. When I asked him about tomorrow’s game & a possible timetable on Rivera’s rehabilitation & return, Backman stated that it would take about 10 days till Rivera returns to the line up.
On the bright side, Cecchini hit a bomb that ended up being the difference make in the game & played a very solid shortstop while coming off the bench on such short notice. Cecchini finished off the night by going 1-2, the same as Rivera.
