Week 4: Pitchers recap

By Corné Hogeveen and Gem Tablak

This is the recap for the Pitchers in week two! Again the grades are Very bad, Bad, Solid, Good, Very good and Red Hot!!

Matt Harvey:

Corné: Good. Harvey made some steps forward in his W against the Reds. He was able to go 6 innings and striking out 7. He allowed just 2 runs. 1 of the 2 a Zach Cosart lead off homerun.

Gem: Good. In 6 IP this week Harvey struck out 7 while giving up 2 runs on 6 hits. He picked up the win vs the Reds.

Noah Syndergaard:

Corné: Bad. Biggest problem with Noah is when he allows a base hit to a hitter with some speed it’s almost an automatic double. Noah has to work on that to stop the running game. Thanks to the steals allowed and a 2 run homerun he allowed 7 er.

Gem: Bad. Definitely not the Thor I know. 7 ER’s in 2 starts.

Jacob deGrom:

Corné: Good. Yes Jake did not allow an earned run in his 6 innings but he walked 4 in the win on Saturday. Plus 3 unearned runs came across.

Gem: Red Hot. 0.77 ERA over 11.2 IPs. He’s on a tear & he seems to locked in.

Bartolo Colon:

Corné: Bad. 5 innings allowing 3 runs. Big Bart will have that kind of outings.

Gem: Bad. He gave up 8 hits including a HR in 5 IP. Nothing to write home about.

Steven Matz:

Corné: Very Good. Matz did not have his best stuff in his start against the Giants. What is impressive to me is that without his best stuff he can still shut you down. He threw 6 scoreless.

Gem: Very Good. I’m still worried about the amount of walks he gave up in his sole start this week, which was 3 in only 6 IP. He needs to work in his control from what it appears.

Antonio Bastardo:

Corné: Bad. Lost his control this week.

Gem: Bad. In 3 appearances he’s logged in 2 innings with 4 walks. Not what I’m looking for out of one of my set up men.

Jerry Blevins:

Corné: Solid. Always seems like Blevins get the big outs. He allowed a homerun to Pagan but nothing more.

Gem: Solid. In 2.1 innings this week he’s given up a run. Not idea but still not terrible.

Jeurys Familia:

Corné: RED HOT. Familia made his saves look a lot easier than recent weeks. He is his dominant self again.

Gem: Red Hot. The man is getting his job done & he’s doing it pretty damn well.

Jim Henderson:

Corné: RED HOT. Wow Gem showed his numbers. Really nice Jimmy!!

Gem:Red Hot. In 2 IP he has notched 5 K’s this week… Wow & nice!

Addison Reed:

Corné: Solid. Got a save and had 1 outing where he gave up runs. Still did not cost us a game and saved the day a couple of outings.

Gem: Solid. Reed did give up a couple of runs but he was also able to get his first save of the season. He probably won’t be getting too many this season.

Hansel Robles:

Corné: Very Good. Robles is showing what he is capable off this year so far. He had another good week.

Gem: Very good. Hasn’t given up any runs & he struck out three this week.

Logan Verrett:

Corné: Good. VERSITALE VERRETT gave up a run but pitched 4.1 innings in the bullpen. He is a nice piece to have!

Gem: Good. He gave up a run this week however he was very solid this week although he did walk 3 sending his WHIP up.
